Chapter Fourteen

Rescue plans

Hal’s friends were huddled behind some rocks. At first he was afraid to show his face, so he paused and waited, listening to Emily and Lauren sobbing onto each other’s shoulders. The others sat staring into space.

Fenton was in his lizard form. He must have heard Hal coming because he turned and stared right at him. Having been spotted, Hal nervously approached. Then Robbie made an exclamation and jumped up. “Hal!”

As everyone rushed toward him, Hal held up his hands and backed away. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry—I’ll get her back, I promise—”

He was nearly knocked off his feet when Darcy flung her arms around him and Robbie pounded him on the back. Through her sudden wash of tears, Darcy actually looked happy to see him. As Hal looked from one face to another, he realized that they all were.

“You’re not mad at me?” he said, hopefully. “I . . . I messed up bad.”

“You did not,” Robbie said firmly. “We messed up. We should have stayed out of sight. Now Abigail—”

“It was awful!” Emily cried. “The dragon—”

Everyone started talking at once, and Hal raised his hands for quiet. “One at a time. Tell me what happened up here.”

Robbie started to talk, but Hal gently stopped him and asked Darcy instead. Robbie had a habit of exaggerating. So Darcy took a breath and told, fairly briefly, what had happened.

They had been crouched at the top of the chasm, watching Hal trying to talk sense into the dragons. “You were so brave!” Emily broke in. Then the big bully dragon (as Darcy called him) launched into the air and soared up the cliff toward them. They had scattered in a panic, trying to find a place to hide, but the dragon was upon them all too soon.

“Then we all changed,” Darcy said.

As Darcy spoke, Hal imagined the scene from the dragon’s point of view, and all became clear. The dragon had hovered high above the ground, wings beating furiously, looking down at seven children scattering this way and that. As they scattered, they changed. One became a harpy and flew off. Another simply vanished. A third turned into a centaur and galloped away, and a fourth became a giant shaggy monster.

A nice, big, juicy plump boy became the dragon’s primary target—but even he changed, becoming a giant black lizard that the dragon had no interest in whatsoever. He focused his attention on the remaining children—two girls running toward some rocks. One was screaming, being pulled along by the other. They would do. Maybe the dragon could snatch up both together. He swooped in, stretching his forearms, his claws ready . . .

But the screamer changed suddenly into a repulsive wriggling snake, although her head remained human.

The dragon was already committed to his descent, so he simply ignored the snake-girl and snatched up the other instead. For a second he thought he saw wings appear out of the girl’s back, but they retracted quickly as his claws closed around her waist and yanked her into the air.
